TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — February 8, 2009 (Business Wire)
MedSym, Inc. is pleased to announce it has been selected to participate in the American Society of Clinical Oncology's EHR Pilot Program to determine whether clinical decision support tools can be effectively utilized by oncologists through the incorporation of clinical guidelines tools into EHR products.
MedSym, Inc. (formerly ASCENT Integrated Medical Solutions) was one of ten EHR vendors selected to demonstrate ASCO's EHR Guidelines during the 2008 EHR Lab at ASCO's Annual Meeting. Following that event, Rabbit Healthcare Systems and MedSym, Inc. demonstrated interest and capabilities to take ASCO's Clinical Guideline Tools out of the lab and into a practice setting with existing oncology providers.
"Being recognized and selected by ASCO to participate in the Clinical Guideline Tools initiative for our work with oncology electronic medical records (EMR) technology from MedSym is a great opportunity to identify and expand the clinical value that technology can provide oncologists," says Keith Whitley, Senior Vice President for Southeast Cancer Network. "This program offers the potential to validate that tangible improvements can be made to the delivery of clinical decision support tools for oncologists through the application of technology. We look forward to learning from this project and further expanding our solutions to the treatment of cancer. We will continue to invest in technology solutions where they will have a real and positive impact on patient care. I wish to thank ASCO for identifying and supporting companies who, like ours, have made strategic decisions to harness the power of information technology to deliver the highest quality of service to physicians and patients."
Said Dr. Scott Drummond, founder and president of Southeast Cancer Network, "The team at MedSym commends ASCO for their ongoing commitment at operationalizing ASCO's oncology clinical guideline tools with the utilization of EMR technologies. By leveraging EMR's at the point-of-care, staff and physicians are able to make a wide range of high quality team-based care services accessible to their patients. As a wholly owned subsidiary of Southeast Cancer Network, MedSym will continue to maintain an expert focus on solutions that bring real value to oncologists and affiliated staff. We are very proud to see MedSym's efforts rewarded in such a prominent manner."
Both vendors will submit scheduled responses to specific usage, training, support, and content questions during the next 12 months. All responses will be confidential and ASCO, in its sole discretion, will determine whether or how to utilize the results. In this pilot ASCO hopes to find solutions to inconsistencies in clinical decision support functions by providing the same set of guideline support tools to vendors who have demonstrated they can incorporate these tools into their oncology solutions.
